Bill Buckley’s portfolio is now online. The pages contain issue-oriented artworks and graphic art about situations, conflicts, and everyday news items that affect our daily lives. His work is “Visual Journalism,” seen through a prism of uniquely rendered art. His “picture-sense,” integrates emotion and ideas with the big-picture dramas that unfold and, at times, “explode” around us. Each of these “arrangements” is a unique and often language-independent art piece whose goal is to encourage dialogue and build bridges necessary for us all to live together in a world getting smaller daily.

For his website, Bill chose a minimalistic, responsive WordPress theme that was slightly modified through programming.

Beginner and amateur photographers ask me often for photography tips. As image creators, we are always learning, but there is one piece of advice I always come back to. The biggest mistake I see amateur photographers make is photographing with the sun behind their backs.

Gasp … I know you thought I was going to share something uber-secret and surprising. But in a lot of ways this is a HUGE trade secret. The truth is that the quality of light itself is only part of the equation in creating great photographs. The other half is your position relative to the sun (or light source). When I am on commercial assignments I am shooting into the sun or with the sun 90 degrees to my subject the majority of the time.

Think of it this way: When you are shooting with the sun behind you—be it morning, noon, or night—your entire frame is filled with direct light. If it helps, picture the sun as a bright on-camera flash. You see very little shape or definition in the landscape because there is a distinct lack of shadows, just as when you have a flash mounted right on top of your camera. But when you move that light away from the lens, the environment takes on shape because you now have a combination of both light and shadow. That’s the trick to the best landscape and environmental photographs, the perfect balance of light and shadow.

Anyone who has picked up a camera has heard of the “magic hour.” It’s that perfect, golden light that appears an hour after sunrise and an hour before sunset that landscape photographers, in particular, fall over themselves to use to capture iconic scenes across the globe. Think Yosemite, Delicate Arch, Santorini, and the likes. And while I’ve been known to wake up early to catch those early morning rays that create such beautiful depth, shooting at “magic hour” isn’t my favorite time to shoot at all. It’s safe, predictable, and expected. I loathe all of those words—what photographer wants his images being described as “expected”?

That’s why my favorite time to shoot is on stormy days.

I have a host of reasons why I love shooting on days when it’s raining, snowing, windy, or about to storm. Here are a few of them:

Landscapes come alive after a good rain or snow.

Clouds, rain, fog, and snow create depth in a landscape that you can’t see on sunny days.

While sunset light is beautiful, it’s the same day after day. It is predictable.

Nobody else is around so you have locations to yourself.

On overcast days, I can control my lighting of the action easier and more freely.
