90 years of Finland-USA diplomatic relations, Nokia event and networking

Finland is strongly committed to co-operating with the United States bilaterally and in the international arena. This was the core of the message of President Tarja Halonen's keynote speech at the symposium celebrating 90 years of Finnish-American Diplomatic Relations. Held at the University of Helsinki, the symposium marked a date almost exactly 90 years ago, May 7, 1919, when the US Secretary of State Robert Lansing sent a telegram to the Finnish foreign minister Rudolf Holsti, announcing that the United States was recognizing the independent Republic of Finland and its government.

In addition to official relations, the symposium also emphasized the more unofficial relations, ranging from the first Finnish settlements in Delaware in the 17th century to today's foreign trade.

KallasvuoThe FACC New York celebrated its 60th Anniversary of promoting Finnish-American trade relations in 2008. The 1990s opened new horizons and possibilities for Finland in the United States. During the last ten years Finnish technology has been branded world-class and cutting-edge as Nokia, in a short time, became one of the most recognized brand names in America.

During our September 10 Networking Season Opener, Mr. Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo, President and CEO, Nokia Corporation, will talk about how the mobile industry will be developing and the challenges of doing business in the U.S. through the years.

Don't miss out, stay active and start off the fall by networking at our season opener.

News from CFCC Toronto
Greetings from Toronto

On behalf of the Canada Finland Chamber of Commerce (“the CFCC”) I would like to extend our warmest greetings from Toronto!

This is the first time the CFCC has participated in an FACC publication. The inspiration to do so arose out of our attendance at the FACC meeting held in Washington D.C. on May 12, 2009. At the meeting we noted that our goals and aspirations are virtually identical to those of the FACC, as indeed, are our many challenges. As such, the visit continued to reinforce the importance of strengthening ties as well as sharing both resources and opportunities with the FACC and like-minded organizations.

As a quick introduction to our organization, the CFCC was established in 1971, in Toronto, Canada’s major business centre. As the leading Finnish-Canadian business organization we promote commercial relations between Canada and Finland and organize social, cultural and educational activities for our members. Our diverse membership includes leading Finnish companies with operations in this country, local companies owned or managed by Finnish-Canadians, Finnish-Canadian business people, and service-firms with strong connections to the Finnish-Canadian business community. We are proud to recognize the strength of our local Finnish-Canadian business community by co-sponsoring the Entrepreneur of the Year Award at our Annual General Meeting and are committed to participating in, and supporting activities within the Finnish-Canadian community.

Members of the CFCC are well positioned to assist companies exploring the possibility of doing business in Canada or which have already established operations here. Our members include senior management in leading companies that are willing to share their knowledge and experience. Other members operate small to medium size businesses that can provide reliable services to larger companies. Our service-firm members provide accounting, investment, real estate, international tax, legal and an array of consulting services.

In the last two years we have stepped up our out-reach program forming ties with other chambers of commerce in Finland and across Canada. The CFCC is also a member of the European Union Chamber of Commerce in Toronto which has approximately twenty-five active member countries. In addition, we have strong connections to the Finnish Embassy in Ottawa, the Canadian Embassy in Helsinki and various municipal and provincial governments in Canada, and the Government of Canada itself.

Several companies that are members of the FACC branches are doing business in the Greater Toronto area but we have yet to entice hem to join the CFCC. Please join today! We are confident that your local representatives will enjoy our events and the connection to the Finnish-Canadian business community.

On behalf of the CFCC, I would like to invite FACC members to let us know about your planned visits to Toronto. We would be pleased to take the opportunity to welcome you to our country and to assist you in any way that we can. We look forward to meeting and working with you.

Two FACC-NY members handle sale of Cerebricon to Charles River Laboratories
Cerebricon Ltd., a provider of discovery services for therapeutic products aimed at the central nervous system located in Kuopio, Finland, was sold in July to Charles River Laboratories International, Inc., a New York Stock Exchange listed company (CRL). Cerebricon chose two FACC-NY members - Holland & Knight and Krogerus Attorneys Ltd. - to handle the sale. François Janson of Holland & Knight led the team of Finnish and U.S. lawyers, which included Neal Beaton, Aaron Goldberg and Tara Vance of H&K and Jan Johanson and Minna Korhonen of Krogerus, in securing the sale of Cerebricon. Mikko Heinonen and Tiia Ryhänen of Hannes Snellman Attorneys Ltd. represented CRL. The legal team worked diligently to complete the deal in time for CRL's quarterly earnings call, including several near all-nighters on the march to a successful closing.

Cerebricon brings together MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) techniques, biomarkers, and behavioral measurements in gold standard assays for acute neurology (such as stroke and spinal cord injury), chronic neurology (including multiple sclerosis and Alzheimer's and Parkinson's diseases) and psychiatry (exemplified by ADHD, schizophrenia and depression).

CRL is a global provider of solutions that advance the drug discovery and development process, including research models and associated services, and outsourced preclinical services. The company operates in two segments: Research Models and Services and Preclinical Services.

E“Nordic Forum – Green Leadership” FACC New York in cooperation with the other Nordic Chambers of Commerce in New York, June 3
The June 3, 2009, event was very successful, with dynamic speakers offering interesting presentations followed by a lively Q&A session. The event was held at Scandinavia House and organized in cooperation with the American Scandinavian Foundation. A very nice reception in conjunction with the forum facilitated networking for about 100 guests. The FACC New York was one of the best represented chambers at the event. The consensus is that the Nordic Forum in May is a good annual tradition to be continued in between the Nordic Chambers of Commerce.

EThe event featured how various businesses deal with these "green" issues and how they incorporate it into their leadership. There was one speaker representative for each Nordic country.

The speakers presented “green” from various fields. Mr. Christoph Luenenburger, Egon Zender, talked about leadership in corporate sustainability; Kati Ihamäki presented Finnair’s new environmental policies; Kristian Olafsson, Icelandic Glacial, talked about leadership in sustainable beverages; Peter Bjerager, DNV Energy North America, described how to incorporate environmental strategies into DNV’s strategy; and Elizabeth Heider, Skanska talked about green opportunities in construction.

ETone Bekkestad, Expert on climate changes and meteorologist, TV 4 Sweden, was the moderator. The "green" environmental issue is a "hot topic", it encompasses almost everything we do in our daily lives from how we recycle our garbage to the air we breathe and many businesses advertise a "green" angle. From being a more abstract concept it is now something we all live with every day and plan and prepare how to protect future generations.

Moderator Tone Bekkestad, Climate Change lecturer and TV meteorologist; Sponsor Sue Pregartner, iittala, and Nordic Forum speakers; Consul General of Finland Ritva Jolkkonen and one of the speakers, Kati Ihamäki, Finnair.Top Divider

News from FACC Helsinki
Introducing the New Chairman of the Board of the Finnish-American Chamber of Commerce, Helsinki

FACC Helsinki has chosen a new Board of Directors at its Annual Meeting on June 4th, 2009. Mr Heikki Malinen, CEO of Pöyry PLC was elected as the Chamber of Commerce’s new President.

Mr Malinen succeeds Mr Ole Johansson, CEO of Wärtsilä Corporation, who served as Chairman for three years.

President’s Message: It is an honor to be the new Chairman and President of the Finnish American Chamber of Commerce in Helsinki. I would like to sincerely thank my predecessor Mr Ole Johansson for his contribution and dedication over the past three years. I am excited about the opportunity to help promote bilateral business success based on our excellent, longstanding Finnish-US relations.

The year 2009 is an exciting one for Finnish-US diplomatic relations as it marks 90 years since the beginning of this transatlantic relationship. It is incredible to think of the technological, societal and economical changes that have taken place during this time – even the past year has seen many changes. However, the Finnish-US relationship remains solid and will be further strengthened through our continued networking efforts.

We are also awaiting the arrival of the next US Ambassador to Finland. It is always an honor to welcome the US Ambassador to participate in our discussion forums. These forums and networking meetings are excellent channels in which we build the personal and economic relationships that are so important for business success.

I also have strong ties to the United States. I have spent nearly 10 years studying and working in the country and have watched the relationship between these countries grow and develop during my career. I am looking forward to carrying out and further developing the aims of the Finnish American Chamber of Commerce.

Heikki Malinen
Chairman of the Board

Schools Par Excellence
Schools Par Excellence Finnish teens excel in academic achievement
Finnish 15-year-olds are world champions in skills demonstrated in the class room. They have repeatedly scored the highest or close to the highest marks in the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA), whether they have been assessed in reading skills, mathematics, or scientific literacy against peers worldwide.

At the time of taking the test, the Finnish teens are close to the end of the comprehensive school. This is a uniform school system throughout the whole country, where every student completes a curriculum designed by state school authorities.

The PISA scores prove the success of Finland’s education policy, which is based on public schools only. There are no private schools in the country. Also noteworthy about the Finnish test results is the small variance between the highest and lowest performing students.

Education Update:  The Finnish Minister for Education and Science, Henna Virkkunen, wants to turn Finnish education expertise into an export item. A taskforce, whose responsibility is to prepare the export strategy, has already been established. Virkkunen believes that Finland's excellent ranking in the PISA-research will enhance the demand on Finnish services. Finland's high position in the research in 2001, 2004 and 2007 has attracted thousands of visitors into the country with the interest of familiarizing themselves with the Finnish education system.
